(And How to Use It in Your Marketing)
If you’ve been showing up consistently on social media and still wondering why people aren’t buying, you’re probably missing one of three things: awareness, connection, or confidence. And those three things have a name.
It’s called the Know, Like, and Trust framework, and it’s been the backbone of smart marketing long before social media existed.
Here’s the breakdown, and more importantly, here’s how it actually plays out in your feed.
Know: The Algorithm Introduces You
Before anyone can buy from you, they have to find you. That’s the “Know” phase.
This happens in two ways. Either the algorithm pushes your content into someone’s feed, or they search for something you talk about and land on your page. Either way, it’s a first impression, and you have about three seconds to make it count.
Two things matter most here: your content and your bio.
Your content is what gets you discovered. Short-form video, Reels, keyword-rich captions, and consistent posting all signal to the algorithm that you’re worth sharing. The more people engage with what you create, the more new eyes land on your page.
Your bio is what converts that first click into a follow. When someone lands on your profile for the first time, your bio needs to answer one question immediately: “Is this for me?” Who you help, what you do, and what they should do next. Clear beats clever every time.
This phase is all about reach and first impressions. You can’t skip it, but you also can’t stay here forever. And yet, many stay stuck in this phase for far too long.
Like: It’s Not Just a Button
Here’s where it gets interesting, and where most business owners get this wrong.
The “Like” phase isn’t just about heart buttons and follower counts. Yes, when someone follows your page, that’s a signal. But the more powerful signal? How long they stick around.
Think about your own behavior when you’re scrolling Reels. You might watch three, four, five videos from the same creator without hitting “like” once, because you’re busy watching the next one. You’re not disengaged. You’re hooked. That watch time, that dwell time, that invisible attention? That’s the real “like.”
The algorithm reads it the same way. Time spent on your content, profile visits after watching a post, saves, shares, and repeat views. All of these tell the platform that people want more of you, and it rewards you with more reach.
This phase is about building familiarity. The goal is for someone to see you often enough and find enough value in what you share that they cross the line from casual viewer to committed audience. That looks like:
- Hitting “follow”
- Signing up for your email list
- Turning on post notifications
When someone joins your email list, the dynamic shifts. You’re no longer dependent on the algorithm to get in front of them. You have a direct line, and that’s where the real nurturing begins. Your emails can go deeper now, be more personal, and guide them step by step toward understanding what you do and how it can help them.
Trust: This Is Where the Sale Lives
Trust is not given. It’s earned, over time, through consistency.
By the time someone is ready to buy, they’ve already been watching you. They’ve consumed your content. They’ve read your emails. They’ve saved your posts. And at some point, they go back to your bio, click your link, and start exploring.
That link in your bio carries more weight than most people realize. It’s the bridge between social media and your actual business. Whether you’re using a link-tree style page, a direct link to your website, or a lead-magnet landing page, it needs to be clean, current, and intentional. A messy or outdated link page breaks trust at the worst possible moment.
Stories and highlights are also underrated trust-builders. Behind-the-scenes content, client testimonials, FAQs, and process walkthroughs let people see the real you and the real results you deliver. That’s what tips someone from “I like her content” to “I’m ready to work with her.”
This is the phase where they buy, book a call, fill out your inquiry form, or reply to your email. They’re not a cold lead anymore. They’re warm, they trust you, and they came to you ready to say yes.
The Blueprint: Your Know, Like, and Trust Framework
- Create content designed for reach (Reels, short-form video, searchable posts)
- Optimize your bio to convert that first visit into a follow
- Show up consistently so dwell time and familiarity accumulate
- Offer an email opt-in to bring followers off the platform and into your world
- Nurture your email list with value-first content that builds the relationship
- Make it easy to take the next step with a clear, intentional link in bio
- Stay visible after the sale to build loyalty and referrals
The Know, Like, and Trust framework isn’t a campaign you run once. It’s a relationship you tend over time. It’s the foundation of your strategy. Social media gets them in the door. Your email list keeps the conversation going. And consistency is what builds the trust that eventually leads to a yes.
